The large bushfire ravaging California has prompted us here at Today’s Electrician Magazine to reflect on the industry’s potential culpability in it. We ask ourselves, “do we, as electrical professionals have anything to do with wildfires in general?”
The answer is a resounding yes.
This article by William Atkinson focuses on the possibilities of power lines being the culprits in some wildfires. “In some instances, high winds can blow nearby trees and their branches into power lines, sparking fires. In other cases, wind can snap wooden distribution line poles, causing live wires to fall onto nearby dry grass, setting it on fire,” he writes.
So much work is left that needs focus from industry leaders and participants. Part of it is getting the right of way to clear trees from near the power lines. For more information on how the electrical industry can prevent bushfires especially in Australia,
